After a tween bedroom makeover, like the many room makeovers before, we were left with the old bedding.
This time instead of stuffing it in the closets to be forgotten I pulled out the old sewing machine and in about 2 hours without professional expertise or a pattern, voila, a dress and a lesson for my girls, there is no trash!
SUPPLIES
- twin bed sheet
- scissors
- pins
- chalk
- sewing machine
- 2 d-rings
I started out with a freshly laundered, used flat twin bed sheet
I didn't have a pattern so I used one of the girls favorite dresses. I used chalk to trace the dress leaving about one quarter of an inch for seam allowance.
( I don't think Mickey cares for cats.....)
I remembered I had some D-rings that I never used for some long forgotten project. Put them to the side, they will come in handy for the halter.
I'm not a professional seamstress and a circle skirt requires math.... I simply added an elastic drawstring for a skirt. The halter top was simple triangle construction with the d rings and then I made a sash and neck tie back.
A little bit of VERY ELEMENTARY sewing
About and hour and a half. A dress.
I showed it to her when she came home from school and her reaction was priceless! I know it sounds corny, but being considered the coolest Mom ever, makes you feel like the coolest Mom ever :)
of course I have to make another one, (twins) but I only used less than half of the sheet to make this one, so there is plenty of fabric leftover.
I'm going to add a few more stitches to the front to help keep it closed, but its construction is simple and comfortable.
She added her own accessories and seems genuinely pleased with it.
Not bad for a first try.
In my humble opinion I think the dress should be about 2, maybe three inches shorter, but she seems happy with this length saying that she will be able to ride the rides with it on and not have her butt touch the seats, unless I want to make a matching pair of bloomers.
Nope.
I like it the way it is and may make a how-to video tutorial for DIY Youtubers, it was so easy!
